Measles Update: What Parents Need to Know
Why This Matters Now
Measles cases are rising across the United States. Measles is one of the most contagious diseases known - about 9 out of 10 unvaccinated people who are exposed will get sick.
Measles Is Serious
Measles is not just a rash. It starts with high fever, cough, runny nose, and red eyes, followed by a spreading rash. About 1 in 5 unvaccinated children with measles needs hospitalization. Complications include pneumonia, ear infections, brain swelling, and rarely, death. Measles can also weaken the immune system for years afterward.
The MMR Vaccine Is the Best Protection
- One dose (given at 12 to 15 months): ~93% effective
- Two doses (second at 4 to 6 years): ~97% effective, expected to last a lifetime
Babies as young as 6 months can get an early dose before international travel or during an outbreak.
If Your Child Is Exposed
- Call our office right away - do not come in without calling first.
- The MMR vaccine given within 72 hours of exposure can help prevent illness.
